Course Title: Fandema Solar Energy

Training on Sizing, Design, and Installation of Household Solar Systems

Module 1: Review on Solar Installation Foundations

Lesson 1.1: Safety Protocols

Topic: 1.1.1 Safety Gears

Duration: 2 Hours

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, participants will:

  1. Recognize essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for solar installation, including gloves, helmets, harnesses, and eye protection.

  2. Demonstrate proper use and maintenance of PPE to ensure effective protection.

  3. Identify risks mitigated by using correct safety equipment during solar installation.

Training Plan:

Introduction to Safety Gears (5 Minutes)

  • Activity:

    • Show pictures comparing solar installation scenarios with and without proper safety gear.

    • Engage participants with questions:

      • What potential risks can you observe in the picture without safety equipment?

      • How does proper PPE mitigate these risks?

  • Teaching Aids:

    • Images showing correct and incorrect use of safety equipment.

PPE Essentials (5 Minutes)

  • Activity:

    • Trainer displays all components of PPE on a table (helmets, gloves, goggles, safety boots, harnesses).

    • Participants identify and collect their own safety gear.

  • Exercise:

    • Organize a quick lineup activity where participants arrange gear in the order it should be worn.

Role-Play: Proper Use of Safety Gears (15 Minutes)

  • Activity:

    • Hypothetical scenarios where trainees identify appropriate gear.

      • Example: A worker wearing improper footwear or missing a helmet.

    • Discussion on risks avoided by wearing appropriate PPE.

  • Teaching Aids:

    • Cards with risks and safety scenarios.

Risk Identification and Mitigation (20 Minutes)

  • Activity:

    • Paired exercise to discuss risks prevented by individual safety gear components.

      • Example: Gloves prevent electrical burns, helmets prevent head injuries.

    • Trainer guides participants to share real-life examples or concerns.

Storage and Maintenance of Safety Gear (20 Minutes)

  • Activity:

    • Trainer demonstrates cleaning and storage techniques for each PPE item.

    • Interactive session: Participants practice maintaining their PPE.

  • Discussion:

    • Why is maintenance important for long-term effectiveness?

Reflection and Evaluation (10 Minutes)

  • Activity:

    • Reflection: Participants share one key takeaway from the lesson.

    • Evaluation:

      • Questions like:

        • "Has this lesson added knowledge?"

        • "What habit will you change as a solar installer?"

      • Conduct a quick survey using mobile devices or cards.

Expected Outcomes:

Participants will leave the session with:

  • A clear understanding of the importance of safety protocols in solar installation.

  • Practical knowledge of using and maintaining PPE.

  • Awareness of risks mitigated by proper safety measures.

Note: This learning content has been adapted for subsequent modules, expanding on solar system sizing, design principles, and installation techniques, aligning with the goals of UNDP’s Climate Promise initiative and Mbolo Association's renewable energy technical studies.
