Climate Promise

The Climate Promise is an initiative by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) designed to support countries in enhancing their commitments to climate action under the Paris Agreement. The main goal of the Climate Promise is to help countries develop, implement, and update their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) – the commitments each nation makes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Key elements of the Climate Promise include:

  1. Technical Assistance: Providing countries with technical support to develop realistic, ambitious, and evidence-based climate plans. This includes research, data analysis, and guidance on best practices for sustainable development.

  2. Capacity Building: Training local governments, organizations, and stakeholders to implement and monitor NDCs effectively. This ensures long-term ownership and sustainability of climate initiatives.

  3. Financial and Policy Support: Helping countries access climate finance and establish policies that foster investment in low-carbon, sustainable projects.

  4. Gender and Social Inclusion: Emphasizing inclusivity by incorporating gender-responsive approaches and prioritizing marginalized groups, ensuring that climate actions benefit the entire population equitably.

  5. Transparency and Accountability: Establishing systems for countries to track progress, report on NDC achievements, and make adjustments to meet their climate goals.

Launched in 2019, the Climate Promise now partners with over 120 countries and territories, offering a collaborative platform for governments, communities, and international stakeholders to advance global climate action.
